15 February: Watch a cast perform an unrehearsed play!
For the next event in our series of Saturday Nights at the Studio, we are doing something that is quite unheard of and kind of taboo in the world of theatre: putting actors on stage without any rehearsal!!
However, this is no improv show! The actors will have a script in their hands that they must follow as they discover the plot twists at the very same time as the audience! For this, we have chosen a wonderfully camp British comedy, with a promise of lots of laughs and mistaken identities. The comedy is being kept secret to everyone, including to our actors. The cast will discover the play and the characters they will be playing only on the night itself, on stage and in front of the audience.
Why would we do this crazy thing?! In the words of our Artistic Director, Edward McMillan:
“Jeopardy is the reason why we go to watch live performances performed by real people. We want to see excellence but we are a little bit excited by the potential for something to go wrong. This is what separates live performance from filmed performances and it is why I think that robots could never replace actors, because watching a robot, no matter how truthfully they may be able to simulate human emotion, would continually produce the same thing night after night, without the variations that humans bring to their unique performances. In our Secret Scenes evening, we are heightening the jeopardy that actors face every night on stage and we are therefore heightening the enjoyment of the lucky audience members who manage to get tickets for this unique event!”
For this unique play, we have brought together some of the finest local professional talent and Bridge collaborators. The cast includes: Alexander Zammit, Desislava Krsteva, Henry Regan, Jonathon Sawdon, Michelle Scott, Miyram Medina, Rozana Radu, Steve Beirnaert, and Tim Myers.
Secret Scenes performs on Saturday 15 February at The Bridge Studio in St Gilles. The performance starts at 8pm, with doors opening at 19:30. The show will last up to 2 hours, including a short interval. Drinks are available to purchase on-site at our bar.
Reinvent your Saturday afternoons
Our series of one-off acting classes – ACT Workshops – continue on Saturday afternoons. These are open level sessions and are a chance for your to dip your toe into a specific aspect of theatre. The three upcoming sessions offer very different themes and are run by Rozana from Romania, Ingo from Germany and Flora from Belgium.
Saturday 15 February, Meisner and Shakespeare with Rozana
This workshop is invaluable for anyone performing, teaching, studying or simply wanting a new way to enjoy Shakespeare. Shakespeare writes about the truth in human relationships and human hearts. Sanford Meisner's work unlocks truthful acting. Even though the latter says 'text is your greatest enemy', the tools of 'acting is reacting' can be used to discover the infinite freedom within the apparent constraints of the playwright's text. In this course, we will explore together natural ways of making them a perfect match.
Saturday 22 February, Scene Study with Ingo
This session will allow you to delve deep into a specific text with other participants.
Saturday 1 March, Emotions with Flora
'Emotional truth' is often deemed to be central to a convincing performance, but what does that entail? This workshop will introduce different methods with which an actor can explore emotionality, paying particular attention to the difference between causing a genuine emotional reaction in the actor versus in the spectator.
The Bridge Show Choir sings at The Nine
At the end of January, this Bridge Show Choir dazzled members and guests at Belgium’s first female-focused members’ club, The Nine, with their repertoire of songs from across the world of musical theatre. Thank you to the Nine for inviting us!
Missed out? Fear not! The Show Choir will be performing again in The Bridge Studio on Sunday 23 March. And standby for further announcements of intimate showcase performances by our PLAY and MUSICAL THEATRE Workshop participants which will also take place at the end of March!
